Work at Home - A Day in the Life of ...by Linda McGroryI was going to say 'an Entrepreneur', then I stopped. 'Entrepreneur'? Me? Surely not. Entrepreneurs are those amazing people who appear to have so much energy; they're up at dawn or earlier, ready to launch into their day; heads crackling and fizzing with new ideas; several projects on the go and all under control; and knowing exactly what's happening and where. No, that doesn't sound like me at all. My day starts somewhat later (I'm not a morning person) and I get woken by assorted paws whose owners want to be fed (two cats and a dog). So when all that's sorted out, it's time for the dog's walk, then put the guinea pigs out on the grass - now, what have I forgotten? Oh yes, my breakfast! Can I start work now? Yes. Is my head crackling and fizzing with ideas? No. But I did have an idea about something I might try out on my website - if only I can get the hang of telling the computer what to do. It's generally fairly biddable, but then just when I think I've really got it sorted - it decides it's not going to play anymore. Next, I'll get on with the index I was working on. What's that word? Ah! Obliterated by a muddy cat paw, very helpful. I'll need to be creative here! Isn't it coffee time yet? Phone rings. Do I want some sheep fleeces, they're shearing next week? Yes please. Where on earth am I going to store twelve sheep fleeces? They'll have to go into sacks in the shed for now. Do I wash them first before storing them? I'll have to wait and see what they're like before I can answer that one. I'll collect the nettle tops tomorrow, if it's not raining, and try out a sample - not sure how much I need, but as long as I write down the quantities, I can always make adjustments. Back to the index. Oh heavens, the dog's hungry again - must be the tablets she's on. Might as well stop for lunch now myself. How can you be hungry Chloe-cat? The dog ate your breakfast? That's a terrible excuse. What was that affirmation about keeping calm? Lunch over, I'll go back to wrestling with the computer - oops, nearly forgot about the clay I'm reclaiming. If I leave it any longer it will dry too much and I'll have to start the process all over again. While I'm here, I'll check the dates for the Village Festival. That's fine, it gives me a couple of months to get enough work ready for the stall. Need some more sawdust - write it down - Now! What was I doing? The computer - perhaps I can get a couple of hours work done and then that will be finished for now. What's that noise? It's pouring hailstones - the poor guinea pigs, must get them back into their hutch. Rain they can put up with but hailstones - not fair! Where was I? Oh yes, the computer ... Down to the last pack of paper for the printer - write it down - Now! And that's it done, give myself a pat on the back, and yes, Tansy-tee, I know, we'll go for your walk now and stop by the post box with these letters. I must get some more stamps - write it down - ...! And now that's dinner over, and all five four-legged furries fed. Time to sit and put my feet up? Not quite, I want to finish that article I started about a day in the life of an entrepreneur. And then, can I put my feet up? Not yet, it's been raining, so now's the time to go round the garden and gather all the slugs and snails I can find before they eat my plants, and dispose of them - don't ask - it's not pleasant! The OED describes an entrepreneur as 'one who undertakes a
business or enterprise'. So I can qualify on that count. My head may
not be 'crackling and fizzing' but there are certainly a few 'pops and
spits' of ideas. Juggling several projects? That's certainly true. Is
it all under control? Well, it may not always feel like it, but
everything does get done. But more important than all this is that it's
enjoyable and rewarding, and FUN! Yes, I can call this 'A Day in the
Life of an Entrepreneur'.
